22-Year-Old Ordered to Stand Trial for Beating of Elderly War Veteran Caught on Tape

DETROIT – A 22-year-old man was ordered Wednesday to stand trial on charges that he beat and carjacked a 91-year-old Army veteran.

Deonte E. Bradley was arrested May 10, six days after the attack on Leonard Sims. A convenience store surveillance video showing Sims being punched in the head was broadcast on news programs and Web sites.

"He asked for a light for a cigarette, pushed me in the face, then punched so fast, so close, he hit me about 20 times," Sims said during Bradley's preliminary hearing. He testified Wednesday that the punches damaged his hearing.

District Judge Mark A. Randon ruled there was sufficient evidence to bind Bradley over for trial.

Randon raised Bradley's bond from $75,000 to $1 million, meaning he would have to pay 10 percent of that amount to be released.

Bradley's attorney, Eric Goze, asked the judge to have his client isolated in the Wayne County jail. Bradley has been threatened while in custody, Goze said.
