I don't know if Stephon Marbury's $15 sneakers will take off, but I can think of worse things for our kids to emulate.
Somehow, someway, we've gotten our kids to think if you don't spend a bundle on something, it isn't worth anything. And, it might be just me, but it's corrupted our whole way of doing things with and for our kids.
Gone are the days when you had a party at your house with a few friends. Now they're events and every parent needs a trick pony — actually, a couple of ponies, if you can. I don't know.
All I know is that when I was a kid, I got a cake, some modest presents and my family sang happy birthday.
End of story.
It was nice, but it wasn't grand.
Today, it's grand.
Today, sweet 16 parties are like weddings and our kids' proms are like Paris Hilton events.
I'm guilty of splurging on my kids as well, so I know of what I speak.
Stephon Marbury doesn't mean to change the world, but maybe he does mean to change the way we think of the world.
Sure, he'll get richer. But maybe we'll get wiser and maybe our kids will too — no longer equating status with price or love with a label.
Sometimes I long for the days when things were simpler, when it was the company of the kids with you that defined your event and not whether you had a troop of jugglers "at" your event.
Look, I have nothing against clowns at parties. I just have a tough time distinguishing who they are: the ones performing or the ones paying.
