WASHINGTON – Here's what just happened in Washington, D.C.:
14:44 EDT: Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' April 12 appearance before the Senate Appropriations Committee has been postponed. Gonzales is still slated to testify to the Senate Judiciary Committee over his role in the firing of eight U.S. attorneys but will not be available to senators at a hearing before then.
Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., chairwoman of the Senate Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations Subcommittee, said, "It would be very difficult in this environment to give the Department's budget request the attention it deserves until the Senate has examined the Department's leadership failures."
14:38 EDT: Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the United States will have to wait "several more months" before knowing whether the military build-up in Iraq is working, but cannot say how long the surge that began in February will last.
