200 Roosters Euthanized After California Cockfighting Ring Busted

Authorities arrested one man and ordered the euthanization of more than 200 roosters during a raid on a suspected cockfighting operation at a home nearLa Sierra Hills.

Officers responding to a report from a neighbor found nine people watching cockfights in a backyard arena and about 20 dead roosters.

Animal control officers seized 200 fighting roosters on the property, and euthanized them.

Several blades and "slashers" used to equip the birds' claws also were found.

Thirty-nine-year-old property owner Alex Cardenas was arrested on suspicion of cruelty to animals, possession of implements used in cockfighting and possession of cocks for fighting.

Officials also wrote nine citations for cockfight spectators.
