You know the biggest danger in this whole "Idol" fat debate?
It has unearthed a dirty, little shallow transparent secret in our society, frankly I think "all" societies.
Looks matter. Appearances count.
They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression.
And I remember one study saying that the biggest negative "first" impression — what do you think it is? Being fat. For some reason, it's an automatic turnoff.
Never mind once people get to know that fat person in question, the negatives subside, apparently only somewhat.
They are still largely judged by how large they are on the outside, not what they might offer on the inside.
So sadly my Shape editor friend was reflecting established views, not simply her personal bias.
I'm not saying it's right. Or fair. Or even kind. It just is.
What's more, weighing more, and laughing at those who do, is one of the last acceptable forms of prejudice in our society.
If we were to dismiss blacks, or Jews, or any ethnic group along the same lines, we'd rightly be called on the carpet. But whacking the fat guy, or gal, well that's ok.
I don't know what pisses me off more — people who do that, or [people who] do that under the guise of constructive criticism.
But that is life, my friends... And fat chance it will ever change.
