KEY LARGO, Fla. – Three men who died while exploring the hull of a sunken Navy ship were identified Saturday by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
Kevin Coughlin, 51, of Chatham Borough, N.J., Scott Stanley, age not available, and Jonathan Walsweer, 38, both of Westfield, N.J., all died while diving Friday, according to a report in South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
One diver, Howard Spralter, also from Westfield, N.J., surfaced safely.
Coughlin surfaced from the wreck alive but was pronounced dead on arrival the Mariner's Hospital, MSO spokeswoman Becky Herrin told the Sun-Sentinel. Stanley and Walsweer's bodies were trapped inside the USS Spiegal Grove, 135 feet below surface.
Herrin said the group of divers descended near the ship on Friday morning, intent on exploring the wreckage.
Shortly after, the captain of the dive boat notified the U.S. Coast Guard that four divers were missing.
