ELYRIA, Ohio – A man pulled his 10-year-old daughter from a pile of snow outside their northeast Ohio home and revived the girl, who got trapped when the tunnel she dug collapsed.
Robert VanHoose said a boy from the neighborhood ran to the house Monday to tell him the girl had gotten stuck. VanHoose ran to the curb in front of the house and saw his daughter Lanetta's feet and a shovel.
"I started digging, but she was packed in there pretty good," he said. "All I could think to do was grab her legs and pull."
It took a few minutes to free the girl.
"She was so blue and unresponsive; I really thought I lost her. I just did the only thing I could and started giving her mouth-to-mouth right out there on top of the snow pile," he said.
VanHoose said his daughter gurgled and he rushed her inside to call 911. He continued CPR until emergency crews arrived and took the girl to the hospital.
"She's going to be OK," said VanHoose, who promised his children would have to follow a new set of rules for playing in the snow outside their home in Eaton Township, about 20 miles southwest of Cleveland.
