Come to school, get a free car.
That's the deal being offered by Santa Ana Unified School District, where students with perfect attendance can enter into a lottery to win a brand new Chevy Aveo.
School officials say they hope dangling the keys to the $13,000 car donated by a local dealership will save the district money by curbing absenteeism.
Santa Ana Unified is facing a $17 million budget deficit, and loses up to $40 in funding every day a student misses school.
Some critics say the giveaway focuses parents' and students' attention on the prize, rather than on schoolwork.
But parent Anabeth Pineda says the contest "can't hurt."
