A driver was under arrest early Friday after police said he crashed his car into a suburban home, killing a man as he sat in his living room.
The wreck followed a police chase, and police said authorities planned to charge Richard Mair, 28, with unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, as well as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Mair remained in a local hospital early Friday. His condition was unavailable.
Officers approached Mair and another man, believing they might be involved in a drug deal, early Thursday morning, police said. Mair sped off in the car, and the other man ran off and was arrested shortly after, police said.
Officers chased the car for about four minutes before it crossed a median and slammed into the home, killing William Calhoun, 59.
"I could feel the shock waves," said neighbor Allan Ross, 46, who was chopping wood in his back yard at the time.
"A preliminary investigation indicates all officers acted properly," Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said.
Calhoun's son Brian, 25, was in the basement, but he was not hurt, police said.
Police said Mair tried to run off after the crash, but officers caught him.
