Former Chilean Dictator Pinochet Removed From Intensive Care

Gen. Augusto Pinochet has been moved from a hospital's intensive care unit as he recovers from a heart attack, officials said Friday.

Pinochet, 91, has been at the Santiago Military Hospital since Sunday, when he suffered what doctors described as an acute heart attack.

Doctors performed an angioplasty, in which a catheter is introduced in a clogged artery to enlarge it and allow restoration of blood to the heart.

"His recovery has been satisfactory," the hospital said, adding that Pinochet was transferred to an "intermediate care room" on Thursday.

The former dictator "continues with his plan for heart rehabilitation, which includes assisted mobility and breathing therapy," the hospital statement said.
