Police raided a hijacked bus Friday and arrested an armed man who had seized hostages, including his ex-wife, during a 10-hour standoff. No one was hurt.
The man, identified as Andre Luiz Ribeiro da Silva, was apparently angry at his ex-wife over their separation and threatened to kill her. He boarded the bus near the working class town of Nova Iguacu earlier Friday and pointed a gun at her head, pulling her hair, federal highway police agent Nicanor Amorim said.
Police pulled the bus over after being tipped off by the wife of a man on board after he called her on his cell phone.
Shortly after the bus was stopped, the gunman released some 20 hostages, mostly women and children, Amorim said. He later released some 13 men through the driver's side window.
Globo News aired live footage showing police leading away the man, dressed in shorts. No shots were fired and no one was hurt.
The standoff, which many Brazilians watched on live television, lasted more than 10 hours.
Hostages released earlier in the day told police the hijacker repeatedly threatened to kill his ex-wife, claiming she had cheated on him. But he did not threaten to harm anyone else, Globo News reported.
Rio de Janeiro police commander Hudson de Aguiar said he did not consider the gunman a career criminal but rather "emotionally unbalanced." He said they had brought in relatives and a pastor to talk with him.
