STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – A man visiting his sister at Penn State University ended an eight-hour standoff with police by shooting and killing himself in her campus apartment, the school said.
The body of Qwynton Armstead, 24, was found in the bedroom, where he had barricaded himself around 9 a.m. Moments earlier, police had fired tear gas and percussion grenades into the room, authorities said.
No other injuries were reported.
The shooting capped a series of events that apparently started late Saturday night after an altercation at a bar, the school said.
Police were called to the apartment shortly before 1 a.m. after neighbors reported a man with a handgun, Mahon said. Authorities arrived at the apartment, pulled out the sister and evacuated five nearby buildings.
Armstead, of Philadelphia, was not a student, but his sister attended Penn State, Mahon said. The Centre County coroner scheduled an autopsy for Sunday afternoon.
State police negotiators fired the gas and grenades because they "felt their negotiations were going badly and thought that he was going to harm himself," university spokesman Bill Mahon said.
Armstead suffered a gunshot wound to the head and his death was considered a suicide, the Centre County coroner's office ruled Sunday night.
