Among the companies whose shares are expected to see active trade in Wednesday's session are Yahoo Inc., Apple Computer Inc. and Washington Mutual Inc.
Abbott Laboratories (ABT) is expected to report earnings per share for the third quarter of 58 cents, according to analysts polled by Thomson First Call.
Apple (AAPL) is expected to post per-share income of 51 cents for the fourth quarter.

Boston Scientific Corp. (BSX) is expected to report earnings of 9 cents per share for the third quarter.
E-Trade Financial Corp. (ET) is expected to report per-share income of 36 cents for the third quarter.
EBay Inc. (EBAY) is expected to post third-quarter per-share income of 24 cents.
General Dynamics Corp. (GD) is expected to report income of $1.06 per share for the third quarter.
J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (JPM) is expected to report income of 86 cents per share for the third quarter.
Juniper Networks Inc. (JNPR) is expected to post per-share income of 18 cents for the third quarter.
Occidental Petroleum Corp. (OXY) is expected to post third-quarter earnings of $1.34 per share.
St. Jude Medical Inc. (STJ) is expected to post income of 37 cents per share for the third quarter.
Washington Mutual (WM) is expected to report per-share income of 93 cents for the third quarter.
After Tuesday's closing bell, Yahoo Inc. (YHOO) reported that third-quarter profit fell 37 percent, as higher advertising sales at its collection of Internet sites weren't enough to offset stock options costs and higher expenses.

AngioDynamics Inc. (ANGO) said it has agreed to buy Oncobionic Inc. for an initial cash deposit of $5 million, and will pay an additional $20 million in cash over two years after the achievement of specified milestones.
Cablevision Systems Corp. (CVC) said its special transaction committee has retained Lehman Brothers Inc. and Morgan Stanley as financial advisers to assist it in evaluating the Dolan Family Group's $27-a-share acquisition offer. Earlier this month, Cablevision's founding family again offered to take the company private in a $7.9 billion deal.
Cognex Corp. (CGNX) said third-quarter net earnings were almost flat at $10.1 million, or 22 cents a share, compared with $10.9 million, or 22 cents a share, in the same period last year due to lower-than-expected sales in the factory automation market. Analysts had expected per-share earnings of 21 cents.
CSX Corp. (CSX) said it boosted its third-quarter profit on demand to move freight by rail, higher prices, and special gains including an insurance payout to cover last summer's hurricane damage to its railroad network, the biggest in the eastern United States.
Healthways Inc. (HWAY) reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $14 million, or 38 cents a share, compared with $8.34 million, or 23 cents a share, during the same period in the prior year as the company's sales and gross margin rose. Analysts had expected per-share earnings of 37 cents.
Illumina Inc. (ILMN) reported third-quarter net earnings of $16.2 million, or 32 cents a share. During the same period a year ago, Illumina posted a net loss of $1.43 million, or 3 cents a share. The medical equipment maker reported revenue of $53.5 million vs. $19.5 million.
Intel Corp. (INTC) said third-quarter profit plunged 35 percent from a year ago as the world's largest chipmaker faced stiff competition from its smaller rival, Advanced Micro Devices Inc.
International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) reported that third-quarter profit rose 47 percent from a year ago, when it had a significant tax-related charge, as the technology giant's sales rose slightly on gains in its key global services division.
Lionsgate Entertainment Corp. (LGF) said the final certified proxy tabulation of Image Entertainment Inc.'s (DISK) annual shareholder meeting showed that Lionsgate's nominees to the board received between 38 percent and 43 percent of the votes cast.
Loral Space & Communications Inc. (LORL) said affiliates of MHR Fund Management LLC, Loral's largest shareholder, will purchase $300 million of convertible perpetual preferred stock from the company.
Motorola Inc. (MOT), the world's No. 2 maker of wireless phones, said third-quarter profit dropped 45 percent from a year ago, when it had a large one-time gain, and sales rose less than expected.
Novellus Systems Inc. (NVLS), a top maker of equipment used to produce semiconductors, said its quarterly profit nearly tripled to exceed analysts' expectations as revenue soared 31 percent and it held expenses in check, improving its gross margin to levels not seen since 2000.
Packaging Corp. of America (PKG) reported third-quarter net earnings of $43.7 million, or 42 cents a share, compared with from $10.6 million, or 10 cents a share, during the year-ago period. The company posted revenue of $575 million vs. $512.2 million.
Sovereign Bancorp Inc. (SOV) reported a 2 percent increase in third-quarter net income as the bank's results were restrained by the interest-rate environment.
Stryker Corp. (SYK) said third-quarter net income was $188.4 million, or 46 cents a share, compared with $120.7 million, or 29 cents a share, from a year ago. Sales at the medical device maker were $1.29 billion vs. last year's $1.17 billion.
Toshiba Corp. (TOSBF) said it has completed the acquisition of BNFL USA Group Inc. and Westinghouse UK Ltd. Toshiba expects the deal to increase sales in its nuclear power business to $5.86 billion by 2015 and 900 billion yen by 2020, compared with 200 billion yen currently.
Total System Services Inc. (TSS) reported third-quarter net earnings of $54.3 million, or 28 cents a share, compared with $48.1 million, or 24 cents a share, in the same period last year, as revenue from electronic payment processing services rose. Analysts had expected per-share earnings of 27 cents.
Wendy's International Inc. (WEN) said it will launch a modified Dutch auction tender offer on Oct. 18 to buy back up to 22.2 million of its common shares at prices ranging from $33 to $36 a share. The maximum repurchase of the tender offer, which was announced Oct. 12, is $800 million.
