Apparently, Sen. Russ Feingold doesn’t subscribe to the same wisdom that my Mother always taught me growing up – “Call ‘em like you see ‘em.”
Today at a breakfast meeting of the Arab American Institute’s Leadership Conference in the US Capitol, Sen. Russ Feingold called on President Bush to “immediately stop using the phrase Islamic Fascist.” Feingold suggested that the term did not “make sense” or “help us fight terrorism” because it was offensive to people of the Muslim faith around the globe.
After the speech, I asked Sen. Feingold a few obvious questions. Here is what he had to say:
Q: How do you separate the war from religion considering that the jihad is based in religion?
A: Well we have to be realistic – of course those that attacks us are exploiting Islam and that’s something that should be pointed out and you have to consider the consequences… But the use of certain terms like Islamic Fascists I think moves us in the wrong direction… I could care less what the terrorists obviously think about what they’re called – you can call them anything you want – worst names possible… But to use the name of Islam in connection with Fascism is an insult to Muslims all over America and around the world and I think that hurts us – Our goal is to isolate the terrorists not to isolate Muslims.
Q: What term would you prefer to use?
A: As I said, what’s so hard about calling the people who attacked us “Al Qaeda, its sympathizers and its affiliates?” Or you could even use the word Islam if you need to in terms of – you can say “extremists who exploit Islam” But the idea of using the term Islamic Fascism is a mistake.
Q: Some are going to say that this is political correctness run amok in an election year – what do you say to that?
A: I say that I’m interested in protecting the lives of the American people – and anything that we do that inflames and angers 1.3 billion Muslims around the world is going to move us away from our safety – that’s the reason that I object to it!
Actually, I can’t think of a better way to describe them. The folks that seek to behead us, fly planes into our buildings and destroy our way of life are both “Islamic” and “fascist.” In fact, they use their religion as a justification to carry out their terrorist activities whose ultimate end is to establish an all-powerful Islamic Caliphate.
Sorry senator, gotta go with mom’s advice on this one.
