Former U.S. Rep. Martin Frost said his wife died Thursday after a four-year battle with breast cancer.
Retired Major General Kathryn George Frost of Latta, South Carolina, was 57.
A statement said Mrs. Frost, when she retired in April of 2005, was the senior woman on active duty in the U.S. Army.
The couple met in 1996 and married two years later.
A Democrat representing Texas, Frost served 26 years in Congress before losing in 2004 to Republican Rep. Pete Sessions. Redistricting led the lawmakers into the same district.
The Frosts moved to Latta earlier this summer. It's where Mrs. Frost grew up — and where she died.
Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, following a memorial service at Latta United Methodist Church.
