Gunmen abducted at least 15 people, including doctors and nurses, as they traveled to a refugee camp in southern Afghanistan Thursday, officials said.

Aga Jan Nazari, provincial director of the refugee department, said 15 people were kidnapped in southern Kandahar province.

Separately, Dr. Abdullah Fahim, spokesman for the Public Health Ministry, said 20 people were abducted, including a doctor and five nurses who were on their way to a refugee camp in Kandahar.

It was not immediately clear why there was a discrepancy.
