Securing Our Borders

Ever wish you could whisper in the president's ear? Give him advice on issues plaguing the nation? Well, here's your chance to tell the world what you would do if you were president of the United States. Each week we'll ask our readers a question about an issue facing the nation and post your responses here.

Today's question:

"If I were president, I would open them up even more. There's nothing working now and nothing will. If people want in, they will get in. This country's economy survives on the cheap labor of illegal immigrants. Nothing will ever change." — Jake (Atlanta, GA)

"If you think that our current border security works, you are sadly mistaken. It's worsened since 9/11, which is beyond pathetic. If I were president, I would hold the previous administration legally accountable for their failing the American people. They have done absolutely nothing to secure our borders. It is a crime that they are allowed to continue making our country and the world more dangerous." — Kip (Boston, MA)

"If I were president I would build a secure fence across our borders to the north and south!" — Peter (Dallas, TX)

"If I were president, instead of giving billions of taxpayer dollars to support the economies of other nations, I would concentrate on problems here first. Why do we give Israel $9 million a day? I would take that money and other ill-spent budget items that support aggression and war and use it to truly secure our borders here at home." — Mimi (New York, NY)

"I would simply close all the borders. I would get everyone who is here either registered as citizens or sent back to their country. I would require that they learn English, which I would have made our nation's official language via a Constitutional amendment. I would require new immigrants who met our military's standards to serve their new country (either here at home or abroad)." — Larry (Columbia, SC)

"If I were president, I would spend all our resources that are being wasted on an illegal war in Iraq to fixing our border problems. I would bring ALL who serve in the National Guard home. Give them a break and then refocus their efforts to secure our borders." — Sammy (Seattle, WA)

"I would levy heavy, severe penalties to individuals and companies that employed illegals. I would so no grace so that they served as an example to others and to the business world what happens when you cheat taxpayers." — Chuck (Charlotte, NC)

“If I were president, I would enforce strict deportation laws. I would enable the border patrol to actually be able to do their jobs with more funding and more personnel.” — Kari (Los Angeles, CA)

“I would set up ‘border zones’ across our border that would be in front of a massive fence structure that would extend all the way across our borders. These zones would be stationed with border patrol, drones that would sweep and detect illegal movement, and be impossible to get through. I would also make any illegals caught forced to work on the up-keep of the facility.” — James (Houston, TX)
