Indonesia passed a law Tuesday granting Aceh greater autonomy and paving the way for elections this year, fulfilling a key promise in a 2005 peace accord with rebels in the tsunami-ravaged province.
Some former rebels and activists in Aceh have said the law provides for less self-rule than promised by the government and demanded that international monitors look into their complaints.
Efforts to end the 29-year civil war that killed 15,000 people in Aceh sped up after the tsunami, which killed more than 131,000 people in the province and left a half million homeless.
The August 2005 peace deal has halted the violence, with the rebels handing in all of their self-declared 840 weapons and the government pulling out nearly half of its 50,000 troops from the province.
