North Carolina Republican Plans to Run Against District Attorney in Duke Case

A North Carolina Republican says "Durham is torn up" about the Duke lacrosse team rape case so he plans to run against the district attorney prosecuting three students.

The chairman of the Durham County Republican Party, Steve Monks, has no experience as a prosecutor and has never run for elected office. But he says someone should challenge District Attorney Mike Nifong (NY'-fawng) because it's not clear "if justice is being served."

No Republicans ran in last month's primary in which Nifong defeated two Democratic challengers. Monks has about ten days to collect enough petition signatures to qualify for the ballot.

A Durham County Commissioner earlier said he is considering a write-in campaign.
