A former Sevierville high school teacher pleaded guilty Monday to charges of the statutory rape of a 16-year-old student.

Kristi Dance Oakes was accused of performing oral sex on the boy inside her car near Douglas Dam in 2004. She has since resigned from her job as a science teacher at Seymour High School.

Sevier County Circuit Court Judge Richard Vance set a sentencing hearing for July 24. The Knoxville News Sentinel reported that District Attorney General Al Schmutzer Jr. recommended an 18-month sentence for Oakes.

The judge earlier this year rejected Oakes' request for pretrial diversion, which would have expunged a rape conviction from her record if she behaved during a probationary period.

Oakes, who is married with children, will remain free on bond.
