A woman and child jumped from a bridge into the Raritan River on Friday, and the child later died after both were pulled from the water by rescuers, authorities said.
Police stopped traffic on the bridge after the incident, which happened shortly before 11:30 a.m., City spokeswoman Shakira Johnson said. She said authorities were still gathering information.
The child, believed to be a 1-year-old girl, was taken to Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy where she pronounced dead shortly before noon, hospital spokeswoman Lynette Davis said.
The woman was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center in New Brunswick.
Police did not immediately release the identities of the victims.
On the bride, yellow crime scene tape surrounded a car that had been parked in the right lane near the bridge's edge.
