N.J. Cops Cancel Amber Alert for 6-Month-Old, May Charge Mom With False Report

A woman told police that a gunman forced her out of her car and drove off with her infant daughter still inside Friday, but officials quickly canceled the search, saying the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute.

Authorities said they were considering charging the woman with making a false police report.

The woman had told police she was in East Orange when the armed man forced his way into the Honda Civic, made her drive around for awhile, then left her on the side of the Garden State Parkway before speeding away with her 6-month-old daughter inside, Capt. Al Della Fave said.

Police issued an Amber Alert but canceled it minutes later, saying that there was no carjacking and that the girl's parents instead had apparently had a fight.

"As a result of that dispute, the father drove off with the child after leaving the mother on the parkway," a Newark city police news release said.

The child was safe, state police said.
