Jean-Pierre Jeunet, director of the whimsical movies "Amelie" and "A Very Long Engagement," has been named a knight in France's Legion of Honor.

Culture Minister Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres praised Jeunet on Wednesday as "an atypical, unusual filmmaker, who created more than just a style — an entire universe."

The French filmmaker plans to adapt Yann Martel's "Life of Pi." His movies also include "Alien: Resurrection" and "The City of Lost Children."
