Two streetcars in Tokyo's tram line collided on Tuesday, injuring at least 15 people, officials said.
Details of the crash, including how the trains hit each other and the number of passengers riding at the time, were not immediately known, Tokyo Fire Department official Noboru Hashimoto said.
Fifteen people were injured in the accident, but none of them seriously, Hashimoto said. The streetcar service was operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan government and the crash happened in a northern section of the capital.
Rail accidents are relatively rare in Japan, which prides itself on punctual and efficient train service. But 109 passengers were killed last year when a train operated by West Japan Railway Co. jumped the tracks and smashed into an apartment building.
That incident was Japan's deadliest since a train crash outside Tokyo killed 161 people in 1963.
