A 6-week-old boy was in protective custody Thursday after two women accused of snatching him from his teenage mother were arrested near Dallas, hours after they turned the unharmed infant over to authorities, the FBI said.

Annette Bryant and Sylvia Nunn were arrested late Wednesday in Midlothian, a Dallas suburb, by FBI agents who obtained warrants for their arrests and located them, said FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller. They were taken into custody after they brought the boy to an attorney they had retained upon learning they were wanted by authorities.

The attorney turned the child over to an FBI agent.

The two women were identified Tuesday by police as possible suspects in the kidnapping of Devon Calloway on Monday.

Before their arrests, prosecutors in Los Angeles charged Nunn, 53, and Bryant, 47, with one count each of kidnapping and child stealing, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the district attorney's office. They face up to 13 years in state prison if convicted of both charges.

Bail was set at $500,000.

Both women, who were in the custody of the Ellis County Sheriff's Department Wednesday night, were scheduled to be arraigned in Texas state court Thursday. They will likely be extradited to California, the FBI said.

Nunn is from Compton and Bryant is a resident of Midlothian.

The boy was in the custody of child welfare workers in Dallas. A Los Angeles County child welfare worker will travel to Dallas to take custody of him and determine "what's in baby's best interest, to be returned to his mother or otherwise," Eimiller said.

Los Angeles police Capt. Bill Murphy said it was unlikely that Devon would be immediately returned to his mother, 17-year-old Dominique Calloway. While investigating the boy's disappearance, social workers determined that Calloway's home was in such poor condition that they placed her other child, a 2-year-old, into protective custody.

Nunn and Bryant allegedly expressed interest in Devon when they saw him with his mother at a store on Saturday. Dominique Calloway said earlier this week that one of the women, believed to have been Nunn, offered to buy the child for $6,000.

Calloway, a single mother, said she was tempted, but ultimately changed her mind. She said she accepted a ride home from the women, and they returned to her South Los Angeles home Monday to repeat their offer.

Calloway said the women were seated in a Ford Explorer when she told them she did not want to sell her son. The passenger in the Explorer then asked to hold the child one more time. When Calloway handed her the baby, the women drove off, dragging the young mother as she held onto the side of the vehicle, police said.
