A freight train derailed in northern Italy on Thursday, killing one person, police said.

No one was injured, police said, and fire and rescue personnel were at the scene of the accident in Chiomonte in the Susa Valley, which hosted some venues for the Turin Winter Olympics earlier this year.

The accident, which occurred about 6:30 p.m., was caused by mechanical failure, police said.

The train was headed toward Turin when it derailed, officials with the Susa Fire Department said.

No more details were immediately available. However, the ANSA news agency said the victim was the train's driver, who died when he jumped from the train as it was about to slam into an empty house.
