I have to start today's blog with an e-mail we in the FOX News Channel D.C. bureau received late last night from my colleague Molly Henneberg. In this blog I have promised "behind-the-scenes" information about our jobs, and the e-mail from her tells much ... and much about her. She was working Saturday and when she left work, she got a big surprise:
E-mail No. 1 (from Molly ... received Monday evening)
Yay! Police found my car in southeast D.C. Smashed window(s), missing steering wheel/column, "trashed" interior. Man who had the car has been arrested. He told police that he and I are friends and I gave him the car, but I've never met him. Anyway, thank you all for your support and encouragement. I really appreciate it.
Molly
Yes, on Saturday Molly's car was stolen on Capitol Hill where FNC's Washington Bureau is. But she seems elated today to have it back. From the description in her e-mail, I am not so sure why she should be so happy. But that is Molly. She is always a good sport, whether sleeping along side the road in Louisiana during Katrina or in getting her car back trashed after it was stolen. I regret that I am not as easy going.
Now for some other e-mails so that you get an idea of what people who watch FOX are saying:

The Defense Dept. is going to conduct an investigation into the death of Tillman. It is a shame he had to die but in war that is to be expected. Some negligence could have been involved but it might have been some other reason, however negligent homicide did cause the death of maybe 2,000 people in New Orleans. If anyone needs proof look at your film showing the school buses under water. I have contacted the governor of Louisiana and the attorney general's office, but I do not see any one talking about it and no one seems to care about the people that died. Is it because they were not football players?

I absolutely agree with the radio talk show host. I'm sick of the women's rights movement saying she had a right to be there. The fact remains the same: If a woman is out in public, in the middle of the night, drunk, she is a target. Any woman would be a target. And I am thankful that there was a radio talk show host that was willing to bring this to bear. As a woman, we have to be vigilant wherever we are and go. And we shouldn't put ourselves in harm's way. It's absolutely tragic what happened to this woman, but she put herself in that situation.

Hi Greta,
I am in complete amazement that Joran van der Sloot has convinced even Ted and the other defense attorneys, and almost has Jim Hammer convinced as well, that he had nothing to do with the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.
Surely you are not so easily swayed by this smooth sociopath. He is so much in command that it is both unnatural and unnerving, and his story still makes absolutely no sense. This kid knows well what happened to Natalee, as do the Kalpoe brothers.
If he had been in America, contrary to his assertions and to the opinions of the panel, he would have been nailed by now because DNA, hairs and fibers would have been properly gathered. I am shocked that not one panelist said this — or you for that matter!
Tell that panel to WAKE UP! They're being duped by a H.S. kid. But I like all of you anyway — except that annoying new dark-haired defense attorney whose name escapes me. :)

Hi there, Greta,
I am on a mailing list for the Natalee Holloway case and the owner posted some strange messages today about you. It said his girlfriend killed herself yesterday because of an e-mail she received from you. He did not say what you wrote, but he is very upset. So be careful. I do not know him, so I do not know what he might do but he is really slamming you and very upset and distraught. I'm sorry to be the messenger, but I think you should know.

ANSWER: I assume this is a prank.

Greta,
I watch your show every night. I was very excited about watching the interview with Joran. That boy is good ... really, really good. He comes across as the most believable person. I have felt all along that he was guilty, but the interview just leaves me with much confusion. I just keep thinking that if he were in the U.S. on trial, he would not be found guilty "beyond a reasonable doubt."
Then I think of Natalee. With everything we know of her from the interviews with her family, I just really don't think she would willingly go off with three male strangers. Southern girls just know better than to do that. Southern girls also know better than to even talk about slavery much less ask if someone is a slave. I will never believe that she asked if the brothers were slaves, not using that terminology. You have to grow up as a Southerner girl to know that she just wouldn't say that.
During the interview, I kept watching Joran's eyes. I remember during an in-service for teachers that we were told about eye movements and lying. It was so long ago that I don't remember much about it. I do remember that if you are facing a person and their eyes go to the 7 or 8 o'clock position, that indicates that the person is not being truthful. Joran's eyes went to that position quite often when he was talking about things that happened with Natalee.
Thanks for all the good reporting that you do. When it's 10:00, we are all in front of our TV watching you ... or our TiVo is set to tape you.

Looks like no one loves you anymore. Time for some soul searching to find out what you did to screw up and figure out what you plan to do to fix it.

Dear Greta,
Way too much emphasis on the left-behind sneaks. Seventeen year olds don't care about stuff like that. How many pairs did he have at home? Did he give a description of the couple(s) they passed at the beach? If someone came forward, it would bolster his story.
If he's telling the truth, the brothers come into play. Did they sense "meat on a hook" back at the beach and go back? Did they hear the slave remark?
In terms of his accuracy and answers, he'd be a fool not to prepare for the questions. People would be all over him if he stumbled or accidentally misspoke. The rash: He's an 18 year old on U.S. TV. What do you expect? I'm amazed at his poise.
BTW, if you're going to ask him what was said or what happened in such detail, it's completely fair, and expected, for him to state points that are not flattering to Natalee. Would we want him to filter the facts? Maybe that slave remark is a key to all this, just maybe.

"Now Houston — and Texas — have so many problems stemming from their post-Katrina help "
Yeah, I know it's terrible and cynical, but this reminds me of the cynic's lament ... "No good deed goes unpunished." We can't let this happen this time. I know you will do your part of keeping the plight of Houston and other areas out there for all to see and perhaps this time will be different. It will have to be if there's any hope for the future of this country.

Greta,
Thanks for your comments on Houston and Texas stepping to the plate to help Katrina evacuees. I've only lived in Houston for about three years and I continue to be amazed at the cities generosity and willingness to help others who are in need. It has certainly strained our police force, hospitals and schools. Houston did the right thing and isn't looking for a handout, but it sure would be nice to have some help assimilating the large number of evacuees into our city without jeopardizing the city who helped them. I feel for our police officers, hospital workers and teachers who struggle to provide for our newest influx into the city. The services we can provide are strained (all the expense, but no additional tax revenue) and as you said — who will step up the next time if Houston is left to pay a huge price. I appreciate you keeping this in the public eye. Keep up the good work.
