President Bush called Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Monday to express condolences on behalf of the United States over the loss of life caused by mudslides there.

"The president offered our sincerest condolences over the loss of life," his press secretary, Scott McClellan, told reporters as the president traveled to the Midwest to make a policy speech on energy issues.

"The president also reiterated our commitment to continuing helping the rescue and relief efforts," McClellan said.

At least 1,000 people are believed to have perished in last Friday's disaster.
