Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) was to announce plans on Monday to make its hand-held device business a stand-alone entity, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing company executives.

The company will separate its portable device business from its notebook computer operations to benefit from the growth of devices that allow consumers to make phone calls and check electronic mail, among other functions, the Journal reported.

Hewlett-Packard has also appointed David Rothschild, a former executive at rival Sun Microsystems (SUNW), to lead the hand-held business, the report said.

HP representatives were not immediately available for comment.
