Dr. Phil to Help Paula Abdul With Love LIfe

Apparently being a judge on FOX’s “American Idol,” the country’s No. 1 show by a long shot, is not enough to satisfy Paula Abdul.

Abdul, 43, sits down with Dr. Phil to sort out her love life in “Love Smart,” a special set to air on CBS Tuesday night at 9 p.m. EST — in honor of Valentine's Day.

Thus far, Paula’s love life has been a disaster — and an embarrassment. She tried marriage twice — first to actor Emilio Estevez in 1992 and then to someone named Brad Beckerman in 1996 — but both unions ended in divorce.

And then there were reports last year of a lurid liaison with “Idol” contestant Corey Clark, who was kicked off the show in April 2003 after producers discovered he had a criminal record.

Clark told all to ABC’s John Quiñones and then wrote a tell-all book about the alleged affair in a bold attempt to capitalize on his 15 minutes of fame.

Abdul denied any sexual relationship, although ABC News reported hearing voice mails from her begging Clark not to go public.

The New York Post’s TV Week got an exclusive look at CBS’ upcoming prime-time special, in which Dr. Phil pushes Abdul to take responsibility for her relationship problems.

“What are you doing to self-destruct in your love life? You’ve gotta own part of it,” asks Dr. Phil, who also is promoting his latest best-seller, “Love Smarts.”

That’s all it takes for Adbul to dissolve into tears. “Oh no,” she says, as her makeup starts running on to her flouncy green dress. “I’m so tired of meeting guys who say I can’t support your needs,” she tells Phil. “It’s too much for me.”

“Paula was very open and sincere in her desire for help,” says the show’s executive producer, Carla Pennington Stewart, who says that the doctor and the singer became acquainted when she was a guest on his talk show.

To fix Paula’s problems, Dr. Phil sets her up on not one but two dates, and then coaches her as she runs in madcap fashion between them. According to Phil, Paula needs to apply something Phil calls “Infrared Dating,” in which she asks her suitors lots of questions and listens seriously to the answers. She should then use that information to make an educated choice about who best is going to meet her described emotional needs.

Guy No. 1 — hand-picked by Dr. Phil — is red-hot country singer Keith Anderson, who not only has looks, charm, fame and talent, but has also just been named one of America’s top-50 eligible bachelors by People magazine. What more could a girl want? Abdul and Anderson hit it off. At one point, Dr. Phil tells her: “He’s a smitten kitten. He’ll tell you anything right now.”

Guy number-two — chosen by the “American Idol” judge — is a regular-guy named Hal from North Carolina. He and Abdul go bowling, with her occasionally sprinting off to for a dating consultation or a romantic rendezvous with Keith. The whole thing had to be very chaotic.

We won’t reveal who Paula Adbul picks, but rest assured, Dr. Phil keeps her focused on loving smart, not stupid.
