Among the companies whose shares are expected to see active trade in Wednesday's session are Cisco Systems Inc., News Corp., PepsiCo Inc. and Whole Foods Market Inc.

Akamai Technologies Inc. (AKAM) is expected to post a fourth-quarter profit of 15 cents a share, according to analysts polled by Thomson First Call

Cigna Corp. (CI) is expected to report earnings of $1.66 a share in its fourth quarter..

Dean Foods Co. (DF) is seen posting a fourth-quarter profit of 54 cents a share.

DirecTV Group Inc.'s (DTV) fourth-quarter profit is expected to be 3 cents a share.

Electronic Data Systems Corp. (EDS) is expected to post a per-share profit of 23 cents in its fourth-quarter.

News Corp.'s (NWS) (NWSA) fiscal second-quarter profit is expected to be 20 cents a share.

PepsiCo Inc. (PEP) is expected to post fourth-quarter earnings of 65 cents a share.

Prudential Financial Inc. (PRU) is seen posting a per-share profit of $1.22 in its fourth quarter.

Reynolds American Inc.'s (RAI) fourth-quarter results are expected to show per-share earnings of $1.52.

Whole Foods Market Inc. (WFMI) is expected to show a profit of 41 cents a share in its fiscal first quarter.

XTO Energy Inc. (XTO) is seen reporting a per-share profit of $1.10 in its fourth quarter.

After Tuesday's closing bell, Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) said fiscal second-quarter profit fell slightly, hurt by the cost of employee stock options, even as the No. 1 maker of networking equipment saw sales rise just over 9%. See full story. See After Hours column.

Alkermes Inc. (ALKS) reported fiscal third-quarter net earnings of $1.4 million, or 2 cents a share. Last year, the pharmaceutical company lost $9 million, or 10 cents a share. Earnings on a pro forma basis were $1.6 million, or 2 cents. Revenue rose to $41.4 million from $23.6 million a year ago. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call were expecting Alkermes to post a loss of 8 cents share on revenue of $39 million.

AtRoad Inc. (ARDI) reported fourth-quarter net earnings attributable to shareholders of $1 million, or 2 cents a share, compared with $2.12 million, or 4 cents a share, during the same period a year ago. Net income came in at $1.14 million vs. $2.12 million for the year-ago quarter. The Fremont, Calif.-based information technology services provider posted revenue of $27.3 million compared with $19.9 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had forecast fourth-quarter earnings of 3 cents a share on revenue of $29 million.

Blue Nile Inc. (NILE) reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $5.29 million, or 29 cents a share, vs. $4.56 million, or 24 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Revenue rose to $73.2 million from $64.5 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had forecast earnings of 33 cents a share on revenue or $80.3 million.

BMC Software Inc. (BMC) said its fiscal third-quarter profit increased 29% as tight cost controls more than offset an almost 2% decline in revenue at the corporate software firm. See full story.

Brightpoint Inc. (CELL) reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $8.85 million, or 21 cents a share, up 18% from $7.48 million, or 18 cents a share, during the same period a year ago. The Plainfield, Ind.-based provider of wireless mobile products and services posted total revenue of $630.6 million vs. $474.1 million.

Shipping and storage company CH Robinson Worldwide Inc. (CHRW) reported a 50% jump in its fourth-quarter profit. See full story.

Cheesecake Factory Inc. (CAKE) reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $23.4 million, or 29 cents a share, compared with $19.9 million, or 25 cents a share, during the same period a year ago. The Calabasas Hills, Calif.-based restaurant chain posted revenue of $328.3 million vs. $266.1 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $330 million.

Computer Sciences Corp. (CSC) said its quarterly profit jumped 29%, helped by an after-tax gain from discontinued operations, as strength in its U.S. federal government and commercial segments helped it increase revenue 2.5%. See full story.

Fisher Scientific International Inc. (FSH) reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $117.2 million, or 91 cents a share, compared with $51 million, or 41 cents a share, last year. The scientific products maker said earnings on adjusted basis were $121.8 million, or 95 cents a share. Revenue rose to $1.42 billion from $1.32 billion a year ago. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call had forecast earnings of 93 cents a share on revenue of $1.46 billion.

Given Imaging Ltd. (GIVN) reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $3.52 million, or 12 cents a share, up 44% from $2.44 million, or 8 cents a share, in the same period last year. Revenue rose to $24.4 million from $22.2 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had forecast earnings of 11 cents a share on revenue of $24 million.

Encore Wire Corp. (WIRE) reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $35.4 million, or $1.50 a share, vs. $6.44 million, or 27 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Revenue surged 66% to $244.2 million from $147.5 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had forecast earnings of 36 cents a share on revenue of $178.7 million.

Hub Group Inc. (HUBG) reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $10.1 million, or 49 cents a share, up 45% from $6.96 million, or 33 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Revenue at the Downer's Grove, Ill.-based freight transportation management company rose to $420.6 million from $387.4 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had estimated a per-share profit of 43 cents on revenue of $423 million. For 2006, Hub said it's comfortable with current analysts' consensus earnings forecast of $1.82 to $2 a share.

Intevac Inc. (IVAC) said fourth-quarter net income was $9.93 million, or 46 cents a share. During the same period last year, the supplier of disk sputtering equipment reported a quarterly net loss of $3.03 million, or 15 cents a share. Intevac said fourth-quarter revenue was $52.7 million, compared with $10.4 million last year.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. (VRTX) reported a fourth-quarter net loss of $38.1 million, of 38 cents a share, vs. a net loss of $42.8 million, or 54 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Excluding certain items, the per-share loss came in at 20 cents compared with 38 cents last year. Revenue at the Cambridge, Mass.-based company rose 60% to $63.8 million from $39.8 million. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had estimated a loss of 23 cents a share on revenue of $58 million.

XL Capital Ltd. (XL) and RenaissanceRe Holdings Ltd. (RNR) reported big fourth-quarter losses as the Bermuda-based reinsurers continued to count the cost of last year's hurricanes. See full story.
