Election officials ended a hand recount in the mayor's race Thursday after loser Freman Hendrix gave up any hope it would change the outcome.
Hendrix had asked for the new tally of the ballots after losing to Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick by 6 percentage points on Nov. 8.
But Hendrix conceded this week that the recount, which began Dec. 8 and was expected to continue into January, would not affect the outcome.
The Hendrix campaign said it asked for the recount in part because of the possibility that computer programming errors affected the race. But "there wasn't any indication that that had happened," Hendrix lawyer Peter Ellsworth said.
Kilpatrick argued that a recount would be a waste of money for the cash-strapped city.
