Nicole Richie has signed a talent deal with Fox to star or appear in a new comedy.

Richie, who shot to fame on the reality show "The Simple Life" two years ago, tells Variety that she wants to play a character loosely based on herself.

"Things are funnier when you base them on your real life, when you make fun of yourself," Richie said. "But it's definitely a sitcom (not a reality show)."

Richie will return to TV in the spring when she stars in the fourth installment of "The Simple Life" with Paris Hilton.

Fox dumped the show at the end of last season but it was recently picked up by E!

Richie, whose father is easy listening pop-star Lionel Richie, is currently feuding with Hilton. They are likely to appear in few or no scenes together when the series comes back next year.

She has publicly battled drug addiction and talks openly about her troubled childhood growing up in a family headed by her famous and wealthy father.

On the new season of "Simple Life," Richie and Hilton will stay separately with various families from different cultures around the U.S., instead of torment their hosts together.

In this incarnation, Hilton and Richie will take turns playing a "wife" and running households. Then, the family involved each week will decide which did a better job.
