The pastor of an Allegheny County church who had been camping on his church roof has come down after surpassing his goal of collecting 500 turkeys for needy families.
Pastor David Martin of the Pitcairn Assembly of God had been on the roof, camping in a tent, since Monday.
He had 255 turkeys as of noon yesterday, but says someone promised him more than 100 turkeys, which with other donations surpassed his goal.
Martin says he wanted to bless the community and figured by doing something a little strange, people would give.
Martin says he reached his goal sooner than expected. He had planned to stay on the roof until tomorrow.
"It [was] just an idea that dropped in my head," he said. "I wanted to bless the community. And you figure if you do something a little strange, people will show up, and they did. They have given over and over — more than I could have imagined."
