Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers pledged unflagging opposition to abortion as a candidate for the Dallas City Council in 1989, according to recently released documents. She backed a constitutional amendment to ban the procedure in most cases and promised to appear at "pro-life rallies and special events."

"It just confirms what I thought about Miers. I think that it will hurt her nomination. I just hope the Dems gear up for a fight and are better prepared to win against Bush's utter disrespect for democracy and government." — Glen (Charlotte, NC)
"It won't stop her from her nomination. As much as the conservatives have been complaining, they will cave in and support her nomination. The Dems will be disorganized as usual, and she will be on the High Court soon enough." — Rhonda (Rome, GA)
"Sadly, I don't think it will really matter. It only shows that she either truly believed this back in 1989 or she was just telling people what they wanted to hear so she could advance her career. Either way, it's bad news for America." — Matt (Portland, OR)
"Perhaps I'm a little slow on the uptake, but to my knowledge there is no prerequisite that states all Supreme Court Justices must be pro-choice. Do people really believe that ONLY pro-choice judges are capable of upholding the constitution? It seems to me that way to much emphasis is being made on this one ruling when there are many others that are just as important." — Jennifer (Pensacola, FL)
"Have the damn hearings and then vote yes or no. What else is there? What's the point of having all these meetings with all these committee members?" — Kelly
"Of course she should be approved. We all know that it is a political issue, plain and simple, between Republicans and Democrats. Do you think that George Bush picked her because she was pro-choice?" — Abbey (Anniston, AL)
"We still don't know enough about her. Is that what ALL nominations should be based on? So far, ALL we know about her is where she ONCE stood on abortion and that she is a 'good buddy' of George W Bush." — Tom (Pasadena, CA)
"I still have to find out more about Miers." — Virginia
