Jordan: Israel, Palestinians to Resume Peace Meetings

Jordan's King Abdullah II (search) said Wednesday that the Palestinian and Israeli leaders will meet next week to revive Mideast peacemaking.

A statement issued by Abdullah's press office said Tuesday's meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas (search) "is in response to the king's efforts to push forward the peace process."

It did not say where the meeting would take place or whether the Jordanian king would attend. It noted that Abdullah made separate telephone calls to Sharon and Abbas earlier in the day.

Palestinian and Israeli officials did not confirm the date.

A senior Israeli government official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the timetable is not final, said he was unaware that any date had been set.

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat (search) said he would meet with senior Sharon's aide Dov Weisglass on Friday to discuss the summit agenda and that he hoped they would set a date for the leaders' meeting then.
