Ammonia leaked from cracked pipes in a southern China (search) brewery Thursday, sickening 100 people and forcing the evacuation of another 2,000 from nearby homes, the government said. No deaths were reported.

The leak occurred in the Dequan Brewery (search) in Jiangxi province, the official Xinhua News Agency said. About 100 people felt dizzy and nauseated, it said. Trees and flowers within 65 feet of the brewery withered, it said.

Some 150 workers were evacuated from the factory and another 2,000 people in homes around the area were moved to safety, Xinhua (search) said.

The cause was under investigation, the agency said, but the pipes appeared to be old and cracked.

The leak was under control within 30 minutes and all who reported feeling sick were in stable condition, Xinhua said.

China suffers thousands of deaths a year in industrial accidents. Many are blamed on a lack of required fire and safety equipment or indifference to safety rules.
