Jack Bauer saved the world, but lost his lady love.

He also died — if only temporarily.

It was all in a day's work for Bauer, who, for the fourth time, thwarted a potentially catastrophic terrorist attack on the United States as the fourth season of "24" (search) came to an end Monday night on FOX (search).

In the nail-biting two-hour finale — 5-7 a.m. in the parlance of this "real time" TV show — the resourceful super agent, played by Kiefer Sutherland (search), saved the life of fellow agent Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard) and caused the evil Arab terror chief Habib Marwan (Arnold Vosloo) to plummet to his death.

With almost no time to spare, he located the stolen nuclear missile that was already in flight and headed toward Los Angeles.

The missile was destroyed in midair by a U.S. fighter jet.

But his brutal, take-no-prisoners approach to fighting terrorists was a turnoff to Audrey Heller (Kim Raver), the defense secretary's daughter who loved him at the beginning of this season's daylong adventure.

Monday night, though, she told Bauer they're through. Bauer, meanwhile, was about to take the fall for the American raid on the Chinese consulate in Los Angeles that resulted in the death of a Chinese official a few episodes ago.

But before Bauer could be arrested, he faked his own death and made his escape.

He was last seen walking toward the Mexican border as the sun rose on another day.

And though he was forced to flee to another country with a new identity, "24" fans can rest assured that Jack Bauer will be back.
