A bomb apparently detonated by remote control blew up a police car Tuesday in the capital of Russia's Dagestan (search) region, killing one officer and injuring a boy and a girl who were passing by, an official said.
The bomb blast killed an officer in the car and wounded the two pedestrians, regional Interior Ministry spokeswoman Marina Rasulova (search) said. Earlier, she had said three people were injured, all of them in the car when the blast occurred.
A duty officer at the Emergency Situations Ministry headquarters for southern Russia, Sergei Petrov, gave conflicting information. He said the car was empty and that one person was killed and another wounded — both pedestrians — in the blast.
The explosion could be heard in the center of Makhachkala (search), the regional capital. Dagestan borders Chechnya (search) and is plagued by violence, some of it linked to the war between Russian forces and Chechen rebels and some linked to local criminal activity.
Dagestan, an ethnically mixed, mostly Muslim region on the Caspian Sea, has been rocked for months by bombings and other attacks on police and other law enforcement authorities. A suspect detained in a clash earlier this year was carrying a detailed hit list of high-ranking police officers in the region, authorities said.
