Report: Chappelle's Been Partying Hard

The mystery of why comic Dave Chappelle's (search) show was suddenly shut down is still alive — but some "friends" say they can explain what the problem is.

He was simply unprepared for the sudden success of "Chappelle's Show" (search), according to a report in Newsweek.

Oh yeah — and he's been partying pretty hard, too, the magazine reports.

"I think he was in shock after the first season, and then [during] the second, it hit him that he was the man," according to an unidentified "celebrity friend."

"That freaked him. And then came the pressure of living up to expectations for the third season.

"He's never been there — where something's so good and you got to come even stronger the next time. It was too much," he says.

The partying didn't help matters.

"Everyone knows Dave likes to have fun," says a music-industry pal, also unidentified. "I wouldn't say it's out of control ... but at some point that has to affect you if you've got a regular gig."

Both Comedy Central and Chappelle last week refused to say what was behind the indefinite postponement.

The pressure of trying to top his previous work was also at play, the report says.
