The California Supreme Court (search) is temporarily blocking the release of personnel files of 117 priests accused of molestation.
The court has not yet given a reason for its decision.
The move came just minutes before the documents were to become public on the Los Angeles Archdiocese Web site. It would have publicly identified some accused priests for the first time.
An attorney for 26 of the priests says the state's high court is sending the case back to the appeals panel that had cleared the way for the material to be made public.
The lawyer calls the court's action a victory for his clients as well as anyone involved in confidential mediation proceedings.
Victims of alleged abuse have reacted with anger to the delay.
