I was talking to a producer friend of mine today and the issue of all this pope coverage came up.
"I'm just so sick of death," she said.
She talked about all the Terri Schiavo (search) stuff and then the pope stuff and said she had it with this "all death, all the time" stuff.
Me? I have no problem dwelling on death. I think too few of us do. It does us all good to know life doesn't last all too long.
People come and go — even great popes.
The image of Pope John Paul II (search) blessing crowds in St. Peter's Basilica one day, then lying in state in the exact same place another day, certainly serves as a stark reminder that the here and now, is only here, for now.
Some find that depressing. I don't.
That great philosopher Evil Knievel (search) said it best when he mused on the risk of his 1970s Snake River Canyon jump that, if he failed, "Well, I'll just be getting to a place sooner than the rest of 'ya."
Evil had it right then. We'd all be wise to think of it now.
We busily preoccupy ourselves with life's pressures and pitfalls, not realizing, as I think the pope did, that they come and go.
Just like life. Just like us.
