Iran Returns to European Nuclear Talks

Iran (search) returned Wednesday to the negotiating table with three European countries hoping to persuade Tehran to provide assurances the Islamic regime will not build nuclear weapons.

The talks, led by France, Britain and Germany, were shrouded in secrecy as they got under way at the French Foreign Ministry (search). A ministry spokesman said the talks started at 9:30 a.m. (0830 GMT). Details were not immediately available.

High-level negotiators were following up on three months of efforts by a working group examining civil nuclear technology, trade and political and security issues with Iran.

Iran has vowed to press ahead with developing nuclear power plants for civilian use. However, the United States and others suspect the program masks plans to develop nuclear weapons.
