Key political events in Lebanon's recent history:
— 1952: Riad Solh, first prime minister of independent Lebanon (search), assassinated.
— 1958: Six-month civil war between Muslims and leftists loyal to Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser on one side and Christian parties backed by the United States and France who supported Lebanon's pro-Western president Camille Chamoun.
— 1969: Lebanon agrees to allow Palestinian guerrillas to stage attacks on Israel from southern Lebanon.
— 1973: Clashes between Lebanese army and Palestinian guerrillas.
— 1975: Civil war breaks out between Syrian-backed Muslims and Israeli-aligned Christians.
— 1976: Arab peacekeeping force, dominated by Syrian troops, deploys in attempt to end war. U.S. Ambassador Francis Meloy assassinated.
— 1977: Druse political leader Kamal Jumblatt slain in attack linked to Syria.
— 1978: Christian militia leader Tony Franjieh (search), son of Lebanon's 1970-1976 president, killed by Christian rivals.
— 1978: Israeli forces on March 15 launch six-day incursion into southern Lebanon, called the Litani River Operation, to attack PLO bases and staging areas. U.N. Security Council adopts Resolution 425 calling for Israeli withdrawal and establishment of an international peacekeeping force for southern Lebanon.
— 1982: Israel invades Lebanon again. President-elect Bashir Gemayel, head of Israeli-allied Christian militia, killed in bombing. Israeli-allied Lebanese militias kill hundreds of Palestinians at Sabra and Chatilla refugee camps.
— 1983: Shiite suicide bomber attacks U.S. Embassy, killing 17 Americans and 46 others, prompting deployment of U.S. Marines. Six months later, separate Shiite car bombings target Marines and French paratroopers, killing 241 Americans and 58 French.
— 1984: Islamic militants kill Malcolm Kerr, president of American University of Beirut.
— 1984: U.S. forces leave Lebanon.
— 1987: Prime Minister Rashid Karami killed by bomb on his helicopter.
— 1989: Taif Accord paves way for 1990 end of 15-year civil war, which killed 150,000 people. President-elect Rene Mouawad slain in car bombing. Legislator Elias Hrawi elected president.
— 1990: Christian militia-political leader Dany Chamoun and family slain by Christian warlord Samir Geagea.
— 1998: Parliament elects pro-Syrian army commander, Gen. Emile Lahoud, as president.
— 2000: Israeli troops withdraw from southern Lebanon.
— 2002: Bomb blast kills Christian warlord Elie Hobeika, who was implicated in 1982 Sabra and Chatilla refugee camp massacres. He had been pro-Israeli but was in the Syrian camp at time of death.
— 2004: Parliament extends Lahoud's term three years after changing constitution. U.N. Security Council demands Syria withdraw all troops from Lebanon.
— 2004: A car bombing in central Beirut wounds opposition figure and former Economy Minister Marwan Hamadeh and kills his driver on Oct.1.
— 2005: Prime Minister Rafik Hariri killed by Feb. 14 car bomb in Beirut. Following massive protests, Prime Minister Omar Karami announces on Feb. 28 that he and the rest of his pro-Syrian government will resign.
