A longtime fugitive nicknamed the "Ruthless Care Giver (search)" has been arrested with the help of tips following a television program and records that showed someone else once punched her in the face in this southern Iowa town.
Elizabeth Raughton (search), 62, had been sought since 1992 by authorities in Auburn Hills, Mich., who said she drained the $10,000 bank account of a 79-year-old woman she was caring for, drugged the woman and left her tied up in a straitjacket on Christmas Eve. A friend rescued the woman the next day.
Raughton is "a little bitty gal who wouldn't strike you as someone wanted for these types of crimes," said Appanoose County Sheriff's Chief Deputy assault and battery in December, when she was punched in the face by an intoxicated woman.
She had been evicted from her address in Centerville, but on Thursday police found her in nearby Mystic, where she was enjoying a quiet evening with her boyfriend.
"I'm not sure she realized she was wanted," Demry said. "It's been 10 or 12 years — maybe she thought they forgot about her."
Raughton waived extradition and is expected to be returned to Michigan this week to face charges of embezzlement and fraud, Appanoose County Sheriff Gary Anderson said Saturday.
