FOX News Channel political contributor Tony Snow (search) told listeners of his daily radio show Monday that he has been diagnosed with colon cancer.

Snow, 49, established the cable network's popular Sunday morning public affairs program, "FOX News Sunday," (search) but handed the show over to Chris Wallace in 2003 after a seven-year run as host.

"For years, I've had colitis, which is a disease that has a pretty high cancer risk, and Friday after I got off the air, my doctor informed me that he had found a small, cancerous lesion inside my colon," Snow said on the radio yesterday. "So as soon as possible, I'm going to go in and get that sucker taken out."

Doctors told Snow that his prognosis is good, but he said he might not be on the air Tuesday because he plans to seek medical attention.

Snow said he hopes that the disease and its treatment will not keep him off the air for any extended period of time. The radio program is not carried on any stations in New York City.

"I'm going to start seeking treatment, so I don't know if I'm going to be here tomorrow," Snow said. "I'm going to work as much as I can because I've got to tell you, I love doing this, I love being here, and this also gives me something to do rather than letting my imagination run wild with fears about what might be happening in my body.

"I'm not going to kid you, although the prognosis, I'm told, is very good," he said. "One of the good things about going in for an annual colonoscopy is you don't give these bad guys too much time to grow, so I probably saved my life by going in."

Snow's announcement was the first time many of the officials at radio stations that carry his show had heard the news.

"Let me just tell you what the game plan is — and for stations that are hearing this for the first time — the plan is to be as quick and aggressive and tough with this thing as possible," he said. "I'm going to find the best surgeon I can. I'm going to get the best treatment I can, and I'm going to get back here as fast as I can because I don't plan on having a long layoff."

Before joining FOX News, Snow was a columnist with The Detroit News and USA Today. He also worked in the White House for George H. W. Bush during the early 1990s.
