BOONE, N.C. – The parents of two young children kidnapped them at gunpoint from their foster home early Saturday in Watauga County (search), authorities said.
An Amber Alert was issued in western North Carolina and East Tennessee for 11-month-old Breanna Genevieve Chambers and her brother, James Paul Chambers, 2.
Authorities say their father, James Lee Canter, 28, brandished a gun when he and Alisha Chambers, 18, took the children in Watauga County around 9 a.m.
The couple was sighted just over the state line in Johnson County, Tennessee, but ditched their cream-colored Mercury Cougar (search) and ran into the woods. Tennessee authorities say there was no sign of the missing children in the abandoned car that was found about midday. There were weapons in the car, officials said.
The children are described as white and fair-haired.
James Canter is described as white, 5 feet, 6 inches, weighing 165 pounds with brown hair. Chambers is described as 5 feet, 2 inches, 113 pounds with blond hair.
The children were taken from their parents under court order because of neglect, officials said.
Canter and Chambers face charges of manufacturing methamphetamine (search), and Canter faces other felony charges, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Watauga County Sheriff's Department.
