Palestinian militants (search) have fired homemade rockets and mortar rounds at Jewish towns and settlements in Gaza. The attacks come hours after newly elected Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas (search) extended his hand in peace to Israel.

Windows were shattered at a crowded synagogue but no one was hurt.

Militants have stepped up rocket attacks in recent weeks. But there were none during Sunday's presidential election.

Abbas has called for renewing peace negotiations with Israel. Hamas and Islamic Jihad (search) militants oppose such talks.
