The American Home Front

Airs Sunday, Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. ET

Hosted by U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Oliver North

After America was attacked on September 11, 2001 (search), it was clear we had to drastically change the way we protect and secure America’s home front. All government agencies had to band together like never before to combat an elusive and deadly enemy that could strike at anytime with a number of weapons. On November 25, 2002, President Bush established The Department of Homeland Security (search). It officially began operation on January 24, 2003. Is it working?

In this eye-opening episode of “War Stories with Oliver North,” we’ll take you inside the Department of Homeland Security to find out if America is safer three years after the attacks on 9/11. Get a rare look into the state-of-the-art Homeland Security Operations Center which collects and fuses information 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from across the country and around the world to detect and deter terrorist acts. Learn how first responders (police, firemen, and medical personnel) are being trained in explosives and how to prepare and respond to suicide car bombers at New Mexico’s Energetic Material Research and Training Center.

Many of the men and women fighting the War on Terror from the Home Front are seasoned veterans. They have served in Vietnam, the Korean War, and Operation Desert Storm as well as on the streets of America’s cities fighting crime.

From these front lines, Oliver North speaks with the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Tom Ridge (search) and Under Secretary for Border and Transportation Security, Asa Hutchinson. From the field, you will hear from Homeland Security’s Director for Domestic Preparedness, Sue Mencer, as she takes us inside part of a $4 billion dollar program for state and local governments to prepare for what some say is inevitable…another terrorist attack on the United States. Historically, you will see how we have faced these challenges before in attacks against our country over the last nine decades.

This is the story of the men and women who are fighting the War on Terror in order to protect Americans from those who wish to do us harm.
