Gunmen attacked security forces guarding oilfields in two separate attacks on Sunday, injuring five officers, a security official said.
The first attack happened at about 1 a.m. local time, when insurgents opened fire on a group of security officers guarding the Dibis oilfields, 25 miles northeast of Baghdad. Three were injured, said the head of national guard force in Kirkuk, Maj. Gen Anawr Mohammed Amin (search).
Also, two officers patrol were wounded in a drive-by shooting near Jambouz oilfields, 30 miles west of Kirkuk, Amin said.
He said the assailants fled the scene in the two attacks. No other details were available.
Security officers guarding the oil-rich Kirkuk (search) area have repeatedly been targeted by militants in recent months. Insurgents have attacked Iraq's oil interests in hopes of cutting off revenue to the struggling country.
